Our History

1872: Methodists from New Orleans built a tabernacle and small cottages in the wilderness, establishing the Seashore Methodist Campground. The camp soon became a popular retreat with visitors from across the South, enjoying spiritual camp meetings and year-round activities.

1910: Van Hook Hall, named after H.W. Van Hook, opened as the camp’s private school, offering a diverse curriculum and serving as the centerpiece of education at the campground.

1930: The camp was renamed Seashore Methodist Assembly, marking its transition into a prominent Methodist educational and spiritual retreat.

Post-1930s: Over the decades, Seashore Assembly continued to serve as a place of spiritual renewal for clergy, laity, and other groups, providing opportunities for growth through cross-generational programs and events.

Post-Katrina, 2005: Seashore United Methodist Assembly supported hurricane relief efforts by housing volunteers and recovery organizations like UMCOR and Habitat for Humanity, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to serving the community.

Seashore Assembly continues to serve as a vibrant retreat center on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, welcoming both locals and out-of-town guests.
